Some Interesting Facts About the Baptist Church
The third largest Protestant denomination across the world is the Baptist Church. Its origins started during the major European Reformation during the 1500s. Anabaptists were the first ancestors of the Baptist Church. In order for you to be baptized as a Baptist, you need to be old enough to choose your faith of baptism, that is why Ana- stands for re-. This is why the Baptist Church was not considered as popular as the other types of Protestant religions during those times. Choosing this religion has even caused people to be persecuted and killed during those times.
In the year 1637, Roger Williams founded the first Baptist Church in Rhode Island in the United States. The religious awakening then took place in the following 200 years or more. It was only during this time that the Church really gained a following because people now had the freedom to join any religion that they want. With the religious freedom given among the people, they no longer felt the need to choose the same church that they were born into with their family.
When the Baptist Church started off, two divisions were created. They were called the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists. For General Baptists, any person could have a claim on the Atonement of Jesus Christ as long as they followed his ways and were baptized accordingly. For the Particular Baptists, however, only a select group of followers that have been chosen can benefit from the Atonement. Among the two, the latter was stricter.
Today, though, the Baptist Church is comprised of a good number of divisions. Divisions are done because of the belief that Baptists to choose and believe in something that they feel right. Basically, if the person is presented with a doctrine or idea, it is up them if they will follow it or not. So, for each congregation of the Baptist Church, they get to decide what must be taught and preached there. You cannot find any Baptist hierarchy just like other Protestant religions and the Catholic Church.
Today, the Baptist Church is divided into five major divisions. The Southern Baptist Conference is based in the southern part of the US and began when people in this area wanted to give justification to human slavery as a way of life. A smaller and more liberal group of Baptists is the American Baptist Convention. The biggest denomination for US African Americans is the National Baptist Convention. You also have the Independent Baptists for those who have not selected a group to belong to while the International Baptists are for small congregation groups scattered throughout the globe.
